Migraines
A migraine is a serious health issue. More than just a “headache”, migraines result from excessive dilation or contraction of the brain’s blood vessels. There are two types of migraine: common and classic.
In common migraines, the symptoms start slowly with a throbbing pain that may last from two to seventy-two hours. The pain is severe, and often centered at the temple or behind one ear. Alternatively, the pain can begin at the back of the head, and spread to one entire side of the head. It is usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and tingling and numbness in the arms and legs that can last for up to 18 hours.
A classic migraine is similar to a common migraine, but is preceded by a set of symptoms referred to as an “aura”, which can consist of speech disorders, weakness, and disturbances in the senses of vision and/or smell. The aura can consist of brilliant stars, sparks, flashes, or simple geometric forms passing across the field of vision. The most common symptom is an inability to see clearly. The visual disturbances may last for just a few seconds, or persist for several hours before disappearing.
A variety of factors can “trigger” a migraine, including: allergies, constipation, stress, liver malfunction, too much or too little sleep, emotional changes, hormonal changes, sun glare, flashing lights, lack of exercise, and changes in barometric pressure. Dental problems may also be a factor. Low blood sugar is also associated with migraines. Studies show that blood sugar levels are low during an attack, and the lower the blood sugar level the more severe are the symptoms. Studies have also shown that women who suffer migraines round the time of their period do so because the Oestrogen levels are low. The root of migraines may also be in the liver; in structural or postural problems in the vertebrae; in the gut; or in a deficiency of Seratonin.
Treating Migraines
The conventional treatment for migraines include amitriptyline, diazepam and propranonol – all of which are used as a preventative means, rather than actual treatment, for an acute attack. In fact, for acute attacks patients may actually be worsening their condition, as some pain relievers may increase the likelihood of an attack!
At The Centre For Integrated Health, we constantly achieve positive results for our patients suffering from migraines. We also identify other underlying causes, such as any allergies, hormonal imbalance, emotional triggers, and dehydration. Our screening helps identify food intolerances and blood sugar issues. Our health programme develops a suitable eating plan and ensures appropriate fluid intake. We also explore any causes of stress that may be contributing or triggering. Through natural treatments, it’s usually possible to eliminate or drastically reduce migraines.
Case Study
Miss “C”, born in 1974, had a family history of migraines/headaches (with symptoms common to migraine). Her migraines were so debilitating, that she was forced to take regular days off work each month; leading to strained relations with her employer.
We started our treatment by screening for food sensitivities. We discovered that Miss C was intolerant to cheese, citrus fruit, chocolate caffeine and alcohol. Her B vitamin and sulphur levels were also low.
After 3 months of avoiding trigger foods, and supplementing her diet, Miss C reported an 85% improvement in her condition! She also noted that she only had to take a single day off of work during a single attack; compared to many days due to several attacks in the past!

For thousands of years, humans have been accustomed to a selection of natural foods that have provided us with all the essential nutrients. Todays diet is vastly different to that of our ancestors, and one of the most widespread nutritional deficiencies is of essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs are the building blocks of the membranes in our cells. Most of these EFAs can be synthesized by our bodies, but the two that have to be supplemented through diet are Omega 3 and Omega 6. The body functions best when these are in a balance ration of 1:1, but because our modern diet is so high in Omega 6s, a typical ration is around 25:1. Large quantities of Omega 3 are therefore necessary to redress this balance.Flaxseed oil is the richest source of Omega 3 fatty acids yet found anywhere in the world. It also has a high Lignan content. Lignan is a gentle plant hormone that is the key to estrogenic balance in the body. Omega-3 oils have been shown to help reduce heart disease, strokes, and inflammatory diseases, and are linked to many other positive health results. Nearly every system in the body can benefit from flax seed oil's natural properties, including the cardiovascular system, immune system, circulatory system, reproductive system, nervous system, as well as joints. It also contains omega-6 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc.

Nutrivital Yucca is traditionally used for cleaning the colon and regulating colonic bacteria as it is believed to have powerful anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. This implies the support of the body's other eliminative systems, such as kidneys, liver, lymph and blood. It is also traditionally used as a gentle laxative to correct constipation.Yucca is high in vitamins A, B, and C, and contains potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, manganese and copper, all of which support the proper functioning of the digestive tract. Research Study Research Study In 1975, Dr. Robert Bingham, director of the National Arthritis Medical Clinic, tested Yucca saponin extract on 149 patients at the California center. Most of the patients later felt less pain, stiffness, and swelling in their joints. Others also received additional benefits, such as migraine relief, lower blood pressure, and cholestero/-triglyceride reduction. Dr. Bingham believes that the saponins aid digestion and absorption of fats. They work as cleansing substances, which help prevent absorption of harmful bacteria and protozoa from the bowel that cause stiffness and inflammation in the joints. Take10 drops in a little water or apply topically 2 month supply if 10 drops per day 1 month supply if 20 drops per day. Occasionally, Yucca can cause intestinal cramping and harsh bowel evacuation. In these cases, reduce the amount of Yucca taken, and/or combine with ginger. It is not recommended that Yucca is used from more than three months, as it may interfere with fat-soluble vitamins.
