A migraine is a serious health issue. More than just a “headache”, migraines result from excessive dilation or contraction of the brain’s blood vessels. There are two types of migraine: common and classic.
In common migraines, the symptoms start slowly with a throbbing pain that may last from two to seventy-two hours. The pain is severe, and often centered at the temple or behind one ear. Alternatively, the pain can begin at the back of the head, and spread to one entire side of the head. It is usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and tingling and numbness in the arms and legs that can last for up to 18 hours.
A classic migraine is similar to a common migraine, but is preceded by a set of symptoms referred to as an “aura”, which can consist of speech disorders, weakness, and disturbances in the senses of vision and/or smell. The aura can consist of brilliant stars, sparks, flashes, or simple geometric forms passing across the field of vision. The most common symptom is an inability to see clearly. The visual disturbances may last for just a few seconds, or persist for several hours before disappearing.
A variety of factors can “trigger” a migraine, including: allergies, constipation, stress, liver malfunction, too much or too little sleep, emotional changes, hormonal changes, sun glare, flashing lights, lack of exercise, and changes in barometric pressure. Dental problems may also be a factor. Low blood sugar is also associated with migraines. Studies show that blood sugar levels are low during an attack, and the lower the blood sugar level the more severe are the symptoms. Studies have also shown that women who suffer migraines round the time of their period do so because the Oestrogen levels are low. The root of migraines may also be in the liver; in structural or postural problems in the vertebrae; in the gut; or in a deficiency of Seratonin.
The conventional treatment for migraines include amitriptyline, diazepam and propranonol – all of which are used as a preventative means, rather than actual treatment, for an acute attack. In fact, for acute attacks patients may actually be worsening their condition, as some pain relievers may increase the likelihood of an attack!
At The Centre For Integrated Health, we constantly achieve positive results for our patients suffering from migraines. We also identify other underlying causes, such as any allergies, hormonal imbalance, emotional triggers, and dehydration. Our screening helps identify food intolerances and blood sugar issues. Our health programme develops a suitable eating plan and ensures appropriate fluid intake. We also explore any causes of stress that may be contributing or triggering. Through natural treatments, it’s usually possible to eliminate or drastically reduce migraines.
Miss “C”, born in 1974, had a family history of migraines/headaches (with symptoms common to migraine). Her migraines were so debilitating, that she was forced to take regular days off work each month; leading to strained relations with her employer.
We started our treatment by screening for food sensitivities. We discovered that Miss C was intolerant to cheese, citrus fruit, chocolate caffeine and alcohol. Her B vitamin and sulphur levels were also low.
After 3 months of avoiding trigger foods, and supplementing her diet, Miss C reported an 85% improvement in her condition! She also noted that she only had to take a single day off of work during a single attack; compared to many days due to several attacks in the past!
Migraine can be a severe, debilitating condition that can affect all aspects of life. It can also be a source of tremendous stress for family members and friends who want to help, but realize that there is little they can do. Fortunately, there are natural methods to treat migraine; methods that don’t involve harsh, suppressive drugs.

The B group Vitamins work synergistically as co-factors for thousands of enzymatic reactions in the body.
Best known for their crucial role in energy production and reactions of the Krebs cycle, B vitamins are also vital for the breakdown and metabolism of fats, blood sugar control and fluid balance. They are especially effective at boosting energy during times of physical and or emotional stress, when these vitamins are quickly depleted.
The health and proper functioning of the cardiovascular system relies on B vitamins as they are involved in nerve conduction, neurotransmitter synthesis and proper muscle function, including that of the heart.
Adequate B vitamins are required by the endocrine system, with B6 showing to be particularly beneficial for balancing hormones in women with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. B vitamins also support the health of the skin hair and nails.
Nutrivital B complex contains B6 in the most easily assimilated form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (p5p). It also includes Choline and Inositol which work in synergy with B vitamins
Today’s diet is vastly different from that of our ancestors, lacking both variety and essential nutrients due to depleted soils. Deficiencies are increasingly widespread and one of the most common of these is essential fatty acids.
While most essential fatty acids can be synthesized in the body, omegas 3 and 6 need to be supplemented through the diet. Flaxseed oil is an excellent source of omega 3, 6 and 9 and is the richest plant source of Omega 3.
Omega-3 fatty acids are the building blocks of cell membranes and proper functioning of the cell depends on the integrity of these membranes.
Omega 3 benefits nearly every body system and has been shown to help reduce heart disease, cholesterol, strokes, inflammatory diseases including skin conditions such as eczema, and offers support to the immune system, nervous system and joints.
Flax oil is high in lignans, gentle plant hormones which contribute to oestogen balance. It is also a good source of B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc.
High quality, comprehensive multi- vitamin and mineral supplement at clinical potency, containing all essential vitamins and minerals, plus trace minerals to support optimum health and wellbeing.
Unlike many multivitamins on the market, NutriVital MultiMax is formulated using only high quality ingredients and produced using methods that are not damaging and do not reduce efficacy or inhibit absorption.
MultiMax includes potent levels of B vitamins, which are essential for energy production within the cell, as well as hormone synthesis, and proper functioning of the cardiovascular and immune system. Vitamins A, C, E, Zinc and selenium provide antioxidant protection. 100mcg of Chromium is included to support carbohydrate metabolism and assist the action of insulin. Trace minerals give additional support the nervous system, as they are required for proper functioning of the muscles and nerves.
Cal-Mag-D plus has been designed to provide specific support to the skeletal system. Calcium, magnesium, boron, vitamin D and B6 work synergistically together in the development and maintenance of strong bones, healthy teeth, skin, hair and nails.
Nutrivital has included colloidal minerals for additional support to proper mineralization. Calcium and Magnesium support the nervous system and are required for the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. Cal-Mag-D Plus supports the metabolism of Iron and the utilsation of Vitamin C.
Magnesium is required in large amounts by the body and is increasingly lacking in the diets of many.
Both calcium and magnesium in this formula are in amino acid chelate form for optimum absorption and bioavailability.
Yucca is rich in steroid sapinins and is traditionally used for cleaning the colon and regulating colonic bacteria as it is believed to have powerful anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Yucca has a cleansing action in the bowel and by enhancing proper elimination Yucca supports over all detoxification in the body.
Nutrivital Yucca may support healthy cholesterole balance. It is rich in saponins which have a gently foaming action in the intestines. saponins bind to cholesterol preventing it from being re-absorped and causing its elimination via the bowel.
Yucca saponins block the release of toxins from bacteria the intestines which inhibit normal formation of cartilage. This may give Yucca an important role in slowing the progression and reducing the symptoms of chronic degenerative diseases, joint inflammation, arthritis and rheumatism. Patients also reported additional benefits such as migraine relief, lower blood pressure, as well as cholesterol & triglyceride reduction.
Yucca increases nitrogen retention by up to 35% by blocking the urease enzyme responsible for converting the nitrogen from proteins to urea, making it of interest to athletes and bodybuilders.
Yucca also Contains Vitamins A, B, C and Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Manganese and Copper.
